The theme of today’s lesson is

2.the difference American English and British English

English teacher taught me in the morning and evening. I thought She could not go to hospital yesterday and would go to hospital in the evening. But She did not need go to hospital because the good news that the patient of her acquaintance left the hospital came. She had enough time and began to teach me, then someone called her suddenly. It wasBe internationl company. While she talked with her, I took a rest. I made a coffee without sugar and milk. A few minutes later, She told me that a new student would come to Sri Lanka on next Monday and stay for a week. The new student was woman. Her job is creating picture books. She came to Sri Lanka to correct the materials about Sri Lanka. After her calling, she was busy. she coordinated her staying and thought who was well-qualified for her purpose. She decided Another English teacher because her house is in suburb of Colombo. There are many materials in Colombo. I heard her and thought her work was difficult. First, She must think what new students want to do and help it for their stay. Next She must find hostfamily who keep them kindly, friendly and responsibility. I heard that American, Australian, New Zealander and so on some host families keep foreigner students to earn money only. So they have no responsibility. When My friend went to New Zealand to study English, he and host mother did not talk with each other very much. When another my friend went to America to study English, host mother went out to work for long time. He and her child or he only stayed in her house. By the way, English teacher has the sense of responsibility for her work. Since I came to Sri Lanka, it took only about one month. I thought I was glad to meet her. Even so, Next new student would come to Sri Lanka suddenly.
In the evening lesson, I learned the difference British English and American English. I knew only that British English pronunciation is beautiful and there are some words that having same meaning but differing British English spell and American English spell. But in fact, Her lesson was beyond my imagination. When something is expressed, there are the different American English words and British English words completely. Example, gas and petrol. There are many such words in American English and British English. Then I thought American culture, movies, songs, science and so on, spreads in the world now and Many people know American English. but British English is not known very much. I told her this. She told me that she thought so.

初・首都コロンボ！スリランカとアジアの喧噪を感じる編

事前に私がインド洋を見たいと伝えてあったので、そこに行くことに。
コロンボ市内でのデートスポットであるゴール・フェイス・グリーンへ連れて行ってくれました。

都会の真ん中に、これ程の芝生を作った英国人のセンスに感心します。
上の写真の右手にあるのが、ゴール・フェイス・ホテル。
1864年に造られたコロニアル様式のホテルで、日本の帝国ホテルに似た風格があります。

次に海岸線側を撮ってみたいのですが、これが上手くいかず。
別れているように見えますが、実際は1本の道路です。
海岸を背にして陸側を撮ったと思って下さい。

次の写真がよく分かってもらえると思います。壁紙に使えるぐらいの綺麗さ！
左手にインド洋、水平線です。その先はインドです。
インド洋と聞くだけで信じられない気持ちです。遠いところに来ていると実感。
右手の道路に立ち、右側の景色を撮ったのが、上の写真でした苦笑。
右手奥の似たようなビル2本がワールド・トレード・センター。
その右手はヒルトン・コロンボ・ホテルです。

テロ終結以前、今もですがセキュリティがしっかりしていたのを感じます。
今でも銃を構えて兵士が立っています(街中至るところに！)。
前には、この海岸線から船で陸に上がって、
街中で自爆テロがあったことで海岸線が封鎖されていたと聞きました。
その名残で鉄条網が海岸線にはありました。

一通り見た後、次はコロンボのメインストリート、東京で言う銀座かな？
そこを歩きながらショッピングしました。

首都と思えない絵かもしれませんが、活気は凄いです！
買い物する人、行きかう商人や荷車、飛び交う声、焼き付けるような日差し。
ボーっと立っていると怒られるような雰囲気。活気を感じる、まさしくアジアの喧噪です。
このメインストリートではどこに目を向けても、同じ気持ちに浸れます。
異国の地に来ているのだと、心底感じます。

このあたりはペター地区(PETTAH)と言って、
現地の方が安く物を買えるところらしいです。
それゆえか外国人はあまり見かけませんでした。
写真を見て想像して頂きたいのですが、白色・黄色人種はいません。
それゆえ私は目立っちゃいます笑。

このメインストリートの終わり付近になるとオールド・タウン・ホールがあり、
そこから先は細かいストリートに分かれています。

メインストリートが終わり、次は青空市場へ。

この写真、かなり好きな1枚です。照りつける太陽や匂い、喧噪や活気。
さらに不衛生さ？と言ったものが全てあり、人の生きている活気を感じました。
特にここには隣がスリランカ各地へ向かうバスターミナルもあり、
人が多かったのもあります。

この青空市場を抜けたところで、コロンボ市内巡りは終了。
待ってくれていた車と合流して、ホームステイ先へ戻りました。

初・首都コロンボ！ショッピング＆ランチ編

ホストマザーにとってもコロンボには滅多に来ないのもあって、ショッピングをすることに。
私自身初めての街だからこそ、是非歩きたいのもあり、あちこち連れていってもらいました。

まずはホストマザーのPCに必要なケーブルが無かったので買いに行きました。
PC関連ショップが集まっているユニティ・プラザへ。
当然ながら、ここは私の役目笑。お店のスタッフにケーブルの有無を確認しながら購入。
買った時に、通電テストをしてくれたのは驚きました。それ程品質に怪しいのか笑。
ぶらぶらPCを見ていると、HPやACER等が多かったです。
詳しくは見ていないのですが、日本で購入する金額とあまり変わらない気がします。
現地の方にとって、PCは高額商品になるはずです。

スリランカだけではなく海外には日本の量販店たるものがありません。
それゆえ品数・品揃えがあまり無く、料金も高め。
基本的に日本で手に入れるのが一番です。
この話は事前に友人から聞いていたのもあり、
私の場合は必要な物を日本から全て持ってきています。

次に道路向かいにあるマジェスティック・シティへ。
ここは若者向けのショッピングセンターで
ブランド物やら靴・ファッション・スポーツ等の娯楽、
スーパーマーケット等が入っています。

未だにランタンが飾っていました。洒落た形しています。

ホストマザー達はDVDショップへ。

このショッピングセンターにはDVDショップが何件もあります。
街中にもたくさんあります。
メチャクチャ格安で、しかも1枚のDVDに何本も映画が入っていたりします。
もちろんというか当たり前というか、違法物です(爆)

スリランカ人にとってはDVDは娯楽になって定着しています。
これを正規金額にして普及するには難しい。
レンタルショップも無いですし、ケーブルテレビと言ったものも普及していません。
これを一掃するとなると、国民への教育やら格安の正規料金設定、権利保護
と言ったあらゆる角度から調整しないと問題が無くならないと思います。
これは何もスリランカだけではないと思います。アジア一体の問題でしょう。

スリランカには「正規AppleShop」はありません。だけど代理店はありました。
特に店内に入っていないですが、日本と同じ料金と考えた場合、WindowsPCの倍ぐらいの料金。
Appleコンピューターを持っているスリランカ人は相当のお金持ちでしょうね。
ちなみにスリランカではiPhone 3GSを売っていません。iPadも売っていないと思います。
先月のApple代理店の広告を見た時、この2点は外されていました。
以前スリランカ人にiPhone 3GSを見せると、「大きすぎないか？」と言われました･･･。

テロ終結以前・つい先月迄は、セキュリティが銃を持って立っていたと聞きました。
それぐらい目立つお店なのですね。今回行った時はセキュリティはいませんでした。
スタッフが立っていたぐらいです。おそらく彼も休み時間だから？と思いました。

外とは別世界です。クーラーが効いて気持ちがいいですし、掃除もしっかりしてます。
見ている限り、主なお客様は外国人とスリランカの若者です。
メニューは次の写真。

スリランカ人にとって、
マクドナルドはファーストフードではなく高級レストランになると思います。
日本人の感覚では1500円ぐらい使うみたいなもの。
実際は400円～500円程度でセットメニューを食べる事が出来ます。
私はダブルチーズバーガーセットを頼みました。日本ではいつもこれだったので笑。

日本と変わらない至って普通の味。むしろおいしくないかもしれない。
スリランカへ来てから、結構良いものを食べさせてもらっているので笑、
贅沢になったからかもしれません。
スリランカ人の多くはこちら(次の写真)を食べます。牛を食べないからですね。

少し頂いたのですが、辛いけど味が無いというかおいしくない。
ホストマザー他のスリランカ人もそう話していました。
値段は高級レストランだが、味はファーストフードってなのが結論です。

初・首都コロンボ！初イミグレーション・延長申請編

コロンボ市内の外れに入国管理局があります。その前の写真が次です。

建物内も外も凄い人でした！なぜこんなに人がいるのだ？と言うぐらい。

この疑問から先に記します。

後から知ったのですが、
ここは入国だけではなく出国手続きもしているオフィスも入っています。
つまり大多数の人は出国のために来ているスリランカ人なのです。
この出国管理局ではパスポート発行が“1日”早っ！
他の地域なら1週間以上かかるそうです。それゆえ人がたくさん集まるのもあります。

ではなぜこんなにも人が集まるかと言いますと、
スリランカ人は皆さん「海外へ出稼ぎ」へ行くのです。

日本人の感覚では信じられないですが、海外へ出稼ぎへ行くのは日常茶飯事。
新聞にはいつも海外の求人があります。
街中にも海外出稼ぎ代理店や航空券の代理店がたくさんあります。
主な渡航先は、中東方面で、肉体労働や飲食・サービス業です。
スリランカ人の多くは英語を話せるのもあり、海外渡航はそんなに問題無いからこそ！
この話はまた別途とりあげます。

本題の延長申請。

私自身海外で役所へ行ったことも無いですし、
ましてや延長申請なんて考えた事もありませんでした。
いくらホストマザーも来てくれているからと言って、
自分がするなんて･･･信じられない！
ミスったらどうしようか、VISAが切れる前に帰国？
と不安が募る。

証明写真が無いので建物内で撮影をしてもらう。Rs150 (約180円)。
隅っこでお兄さんが私をデジカメで撮影し、家庭用プリンターで印刷、すっごいシンプル！笑
延長申請用紙に写真を貼って、必要事項を記入。

いよいよ担当官と面接？です。
厳しい質問をされたらどう答えるのか不安一杯で入室。
ホストマザーも入室してくれました。
担当官は用紙を一読し、どこに滞在しているのか？と質問があり、
ホストマザーが「私の家です。」
私も「彼女の家に滞在します(英語で)」と
答えたら･･･面接終わりました笑。

え？あっけない･･･もう終わり？びっくりしました。
質問らしいこともなく、数分でした。
事前にホストファミリーやら私の友人から聞いていた通りでした。
私がどうこうではなく、これは日本国の素晴らしさにあります。

単純に言うと、
「日本人は悪いことをしない(犯罪・不法滞在等)」
という前提条件や暗黙の了解があるので、早く終わるのです。
逆に国の信用が低い国民の延長申請は厳しいと聞きました。
こういう素晴らしさは体感しないと分からないものですね。
日本国民は海外でこういう経験こそして欲しい。
日本国の信用を失う行為はしたくないものだと思います。

延長申請料金を支払って終わりました。
役所らしく待たされましたが･･･笑、どこの国も役所は遅いみたいです。

いやぁ心の底から安心した！無事に終わって何より！
そして日本国の素晴らしさを実感しました！

初・首都コロンボ！いざイミグレーションへ編

私のVISAの延長申請のために、スリランカの首都コロンボへ行く事になりました。

スリランカ国際空港は首都コロンボとは離れたところにあります。

ホームステイ先には空港から直接向かったのもあり、
未だコロンボを通ったことすらありませんでした。
滞在中も遠出する際もコロンボとは全く違う方面ばかりだったのもあり、
一度も足を向けたことがありませんでした。

そして、いよいよ首都コロンボに行くことに！

どこの国も同じらしく、役所での事務手続きには時間がかかることもあり笑、
朝7時に出発。普段なら車で1時間ぐらいの距離らしいのですが、
朝のラッシュタイムを見込んで、早めに出発！

途中、車の整備で立ち寄った所で、シンハラ語の新聞を見せてもらいました。

スリランカの新聞でも鳩山首相辞任が記事になっていました。

全く読めません･･･分かる文字すらありません･･･子供の悪戯書きのような文字なのです。
で、この記事は何を書いているかと言いますと「日本の鳩山首相辞任」です(爆)。
ホストマザー曰く、昨晩テレビニュースでも流れていたそうです。
世界に“まだ”影響力のある日本だからこそ、流れたのだろうと思います。

途中の道の様子を写真に撮りました。

一応、片側一車線です笑。
思うに東南アジアから西に共通しているのだと思いますが、
ドライバーの皆様のテクニックとマナーは抜群です。

この写真の状況を説明しますと、左に見える緑色の車・通称トゥクトゥク(三輪車)を
赤色の路線バス(赤色は国営バス、他の色は私営バス)が追い抜くところです。

片側一車線しかないから、
遅い車は抜かれていくことを理解しています。
早い車は追い抜いていくことを理解しています。
双方立場を理解しているので、トラブルは一切起きません。
対向車線も同じように動いています。

つまり皆が自分の立場を理解しあっているのです。
だから追い抜く・追い抜かれる行動に入った時、皆が協力します。

やり方を説明します笑。

まずこの場合、
1)赤色の路線バスの運転手がクラクションもしくはヘッドライトを点けて、
緑色の車のバックミラーに映るように若干車体をズラします。
そして緑色の車に赤色の路線バスの存在を伝えます。
2)緑色の車はバックミラーや耳で、赤い路線バスの存在を認識します。
そして出来る限り左端に寄ります。
3)赤色の路線バスは対向車が来ていないことを確認。
当然ながら対向車線にはみ出る行為をするので正面衝突を避けるためです。
対向車が来ていないことを確認して、一気に緑色の車を追い抜きます。
4)追い越し完了。赤色の路線バスは感謝のクラクションを鳴らします。

とにかく表示板・案内板・信号・ルールと言ったものが無いに等しいので、
お互いがお互いを譲り合ったり、尊重しないと動けないからこそ
皆がマナーがいいのです。だからこそ案外事故は起きないと聞いています。
こういう気持ちが仏教徒の表れの気がします。

いつもなら1時間で行くところを、途中で寄り道したのと突然の豪雨があり、
9時過ぎにimmigrationに到着しました。

Today, I had to go to Colombo City to extend my VISA. Because the immigration office is in Colombo City. English teacher, Shop owner and I left the house at 7:20. When we went to Colombo, I knew the news that Hatoyama Prime Minister resigned. Recently Abe, Hukuda, Yoshida and Hatoyama became Prime Minister but they resigned for short time. The Japanese Prime Minister is like a part time job. Foreigners trust Japan. The car ran for a while. Another English teacher joined us. She was Miss.Yoshiko’s host mother. I had no space to talk with her. Because I worryed about my extention. I wondered if I could answer the question of the immigration. If I could not answer, I must go back Japan on June 11. It began to rain very heavy.
I reached the immigration office and entered this. there were many people on second floor. Later, English teacher told me that this building had the emigration office, too. Many Sri Lanka people got their passport to work abroad. they could get their passport in a day. I went up to third floor. There were a few people there. I had no my photo and I was taken my photo. I paid Rs150. After I wrote the application form of extention, I met the immigration officer with English teacher together. He asked me a few questions and She answered him. The meeting was finished all too soon. When I went to the payment, the other officer asked me that visa extension of two months is Rs2,450 and three months was Rs14,000. I thought I could not listen to her. But this price was right. We all surprised at the different price. So we go back to the immigration officer and I applied for two months. He allowed to change my visa extention. I paid Rs2,450. At last, It did not worry me that my visa application was finished. I could stay here legally.
We left there and went to Unity Plaza to buy audio cable. We got it there. Next, we walked to Majestic City. English teacher and Another English teacher enjoyed shopping, especially buying DVD. Next destination was MacDonald’s where I wanted to go. We had the launch together there. English teacher, Another English teacher and Shop owner ate Chiken rice. I ate Double Cheese Burger which I had ate in Japan. Double Cheese Burger was same taste of Japanese. Chiken rice were hot but were not delicious. I checked there prices again. I felt high prices. There prices and Japanese prices are similar. Many foreingers and young Sri Lanka people come there. In Sri Lanka, This is not first food but expensive restrant.
We left there and English teacher took me to Galle Face Green because I wanted to look at Indian Ocean. It was clear and good ocean view. Galle Face Hotel looks like Enpire Hotel in Japan. This has a long history and was built in colonial style. I walked by the beachside and smelled salty. I could see the horizon of Indian Ocean and thought I was in the foreign country where was far form Japan. This location was my favorite. When I went around there, suddenly somebody told me in Japanese. I looked at him. He was Sri Lanka person and spoke Japanese very well. He told me he stayed in Nagoya for six years. I did not think I met the good Japanese speaker of Sri Lanka person there.
Next purpose was shopping. On the Main Street, we got off the car. Many three-wheeler, cars, tracks, bus and carts ran there. Many people walked there. There is the Asian burning crowed street where many Japanese imagine. I was overwhelmed by there. I felt the human’s energy. I reached Bazzar. This place was my favorite because I saw the burning sun and blue sky and human’s energy. In Japan, there are no similar locations.
We got our car on the end of the bazzar. I comforted myself in the car. English teacher asked me how I feel about Colombo. I said, “Colombo is big city. There are many people. The traffic is busy. It is air polution. This is just metropolis. But I don’t live in Colombo. Walacapola is good.” English teacher added that it was bad smell.
On the road to home, we sometimes bought pineapple, fishes, a mosquito net and so on. Before we went home, they took me to the secret palace. Then, the wild boy’s dad joined us. we drank alchol and saun. My selection was “yappa sukkyanen” and “tsugarukaikyou-huyugeshiki” When I was a child, I didn’t think I’ll be in Sri Lanka in the future.
When we left there, I felt bad. They worried about me. I was glad but I felt bad. First I was a bit high because it was hot beer and high-alcohol beer. There were reassons. The main reson was “dehydration”. Today, I didn’t drink enough water. I reached home and go to the bed soon.

I reached the immigration office and entered there. There were many people on second floor. Later, English teacher told me that this building had the emigration office, too. Many Sri Lanka people get their passport to work abroad. They could get their passport in a day. I went up to third floor. There were a few people there. I had no my photo and took my photo. I paid Rs150. After I wrote the application form of extension, I met the immigration officer with English teacher together. He asked me a few questions and she answered him. The meeting was finished all too soon. When I went to the payment, the other officer asked me that visa extension of two months is Rs2,450 and three months is Rs14,000. I thought I could not hear her. But this charge was right. We all surprised at the different charges. So we go back to the immigration officer and I applied for two months. He allowed changing my visa extension. I paid Rs2,450. At last, my visa application was handed over and approved. I could stay here legally.
We left there and went to Unity Plaza to buy audio cable. We got it there. Next, we walked to Majestic City. English teacher and Another English teacher enjoyed shopping, especially buying DVDs. Next destination was MacDonald’s where I wanted to go. We had the lunch together there. English teacher, Another English teacher and Shop owner ate Chicken rice. I ate Double Cheese Burger which I have eaten in Japan. Double Cheese Burger was same taste of Japanese. Chicken rice were hot but were not delicious. I checked there prices again. I felt high prices. There prices and Japanese prices are similar. Many foreigners and young Sri Lanka people come there. In Sri Lanka, This is not a fast food restaurant but expensive restaurant.
We left there and English teacher took me to Galle Face Green because I wanted to look at Indian Ocean. It was clear and good ocean view. Galle Face Hotel looks like Empire Hotel in Japan. This has a long history and was built in colonial style. I walked by the beachside and smelled salty. I could see the horizon of Indian Ocean and thought I was in the foreign country which is far form Japan. This location is my favorite. When I went around there, suddenly somebody told me in Japanese. I looked at him. He was Sri Lanka person and spoke Japanese very well. He told me he stayed in Nagoya for six years. I did not think I met a good Japanese speaker of Sri Lanka person here.
Next purpose was shopping. On the Main Street, we got off the car. Many three-wheeler, cars, tracks, bus and carts ran there. Many people walked there. There is the Asian burning crowed street where many Japanese imagine. I was overwhelmed by there. I felt the human’s energy. I reached Bazaar. This place was my favorite because I saw the burning sun and blue sky and human’s energy. In Japan, there are no similar locations.
We got our car on the end of the bazaar. I comforted myself in the car. English teacher asked me how I feel about Colombo. I said, “Colombo is big city. There are many people. The traffic is busy but there is air pollution. This is just metropolis. But I don’t live in Colombo. Walakapola is good.” English teacher added that City is bad smelling.
On the road to home, we sometimes bought pineapple, fish, a mosquito net and so on. Before we went home, they took me to the secret place. Then, the wild boy’s dad joined with us. we drank alcohol and sang. My selection was “yappa sukkyanen” and “tsugarukaikyou-huyugeshiki” When I was a child, I didn’t think I’ll be in Sri Lanka in the future.
When we left there, I felt bad. They worried about me. I was glad but I felt bad. First I was a bit high because it was hot beer and high-alcohol beer. There were reasons. The main reason was “dehydration”. Today, I didn’t drink enough water. I reached home and went to bed soon.
